Her History: I've been involved in boating, automotive and motorcycle industries for years. Always designing and building something (my bio). In 2018 I started designing a house boat that was easy to drive (on and off water), comfortable throughout, and fun. She can be hauled on the road with a pickup (5,500 lb) and without any special or wide load hauling permits. These are difficult tasks for most houseboats to accomplish. Heidi-Ho is the great boat for romantic getaways, family excursions and a fabulous way to entertain and enjoy friends. While I designed much of her, she was built and commissioned by a very professional and experienced houseboat builder. She was named after my favorite dog, Heidi.

Custom 30 ft houseboat built by F&S Houseboats:

  • Commissioned in Mar 2019.
  • Sleeps 3, kitchen, toilet, shower, large deck. 115 HP Outboard. Trailer.
  • Innovative design: 11.5 ft Wide boat deck reduces to 8.5 ft for road transport (boat is easily transported over road). Cabin can also be removed and used as a road trailer.

More Pluses:

  • She is trailerable: Can be moved from marina to marina. And can be dry docked when not is use. Most houseboats are not trailerable (need cranes and "wide load" trucks to move). In my experience, at 2 different marinas, Drydock fees are $80-100 a month and marina slip fees about $300 a month.
  • Makes a great second or get-a-way home: Unlike real estate, there are no property taxes. And slip fees are low at about $300 a month (and many marinas include water and power with a slip rental).
  • Inexpensive to Insure with boat liability/comprehensive damage policies available from insurers like Progressive for a couple hundred dollars a year.

Innovative 2019 Fabulous, Fun Custom House Boat:

An amazing design and thought process that brings something new to house boating.

Comfortable cruises: She is a stable boat and takes waves well (< 2 ft recommended). A crew of 2 is plenty to handle maneuvers and docking.

A side door welcomes passengers into the furnished area with bench seats, a removable dining room table, and center windows. A galley kitchen includes a three-burner range and oven, cabinets for storage, and a refrigerator. During the day, the rear doors of the cabin open up to the pontoon platform, making for an indoor-outdoor lounge complete with boat seats.

At night, the dinette transforms to a double bed, and the cabin can sleep three total thanks to a bunk bed that drops down from the ceiling. A composting toilet, 175-watt solar panel, stereo system, and swim ladder round out the houseboat's amenities.

Another unique feature of the Heidi-Ho build is that it can be transported over road, the deck reduces to an 8.5-foot width. The cabin can also be removed from the boat deck and used as a licensed road travel trailer with all the necessities.

Is Living on a Houseboat affordable, even cheap? (compared to a traditional home)

Heidi-Ho is a Floating Tiny House

You usually do not have to pay property taxes for a houseboat. The main fixed costs associated with houseboats are: Slip, Berthing, Mooring or dock rental fees (for a 30 ft houseboat this is about $300 a month), Insurance (about $200 a year for comprehensive and liability coverage) and boat registration fees (varies by state, and similar to auto fees).

The financial advantages of living on a houseboat can include: No property taxes, generally lower maintenance costs (and no HOA fees), no yard or landscaping costs.

The financial disadvantages of living on a houseboat include: Maintenance costs related to the engine and other parts of the houseboat, Fuel costs, Dock or marina costs. Heid-Ho has a gray water tank and a composting toilet. So there are no sewage fees; Many marinas include power and water as part of the marina fee, and have dumping stations where the gray water tank can be wheeled over to empty it.

Houseboats do depreciate over time in value. But if you maintain your houseboat well it can hold a good amount of its value.

What is a Pontoon Tiny Home?

Pontoon tiny homes are custom homes (houseboats) designed to fit onto a pontoon base (tubes): a deck/party boat and home in one. You can experience comforts of home on the water, without the cost (and complexity) of owning an enormous houseboat.
